New Method of Identification/diagnosing of Autism in Children

Sunday, December 16, 2012

diagnosing autism...FOR the first time, scientists have discovered a method that can accurately identify a biological sign of autism in very young toddlers.

identification of autism..Previously, the biological causes of autism and autism diagnosis may only be known after the age of 3 or 4 years, through subjective tests and based on behavioral symptoms. By scanning the brain activity of children when sleeping, scientists at the Weizmann Institute of Science Mellon, Carnegie University and the University of California, San Diego, found that the brains of children with autism have significantly weaker synchronization in brain regions associated with language and communication when compared with children who nonautistik.

"Identifying biological signs of autism has been a major goal for many scientists around the world, both because they may allow early diagnosis, and because they can give researchers important clues about the causes and progression of this disorder," said Dr. Ilan Dinstein involved in this study .

In sleeping autistic toddlers, the scans showed the level of synchronization between the left and right brain areas related to language and communication skills decline.

identification of autism..This pattern was not seen in children with normal development or in those with delayed language development but not autism. In fact, the researchers found that this synchronization was strongly associated with the ability of autistic children to communicate. The weaker the synchronization, the more severe are the symptoms of autism.

Based on the results of the scan as well, the scientists were able to identify 70 percent of autistic children between ages 1 and 3 years. The study was published in the June 2011 issue of the journal Neuron.
