Methods have been discovered in assisting the adult autistic patients with simulated conversations. In this method, the patient will interact with a virtual partner to develop social interaction skills better.
More than half of people diagnosed with autism have normal intellectual abilities, but they often have trouble interacting in a social environment such as conversing with others.
Cheryl Trepagnier and Corinne Bell of The Catholic University of America, Washington, DC, and Dale Olsen and Laura Boteler of SIMmersion LLC, Columbia, did research to help adults with autism using a simulated conversation.
Their results showed that adults with autism who participated in the conversation simulation program responded positively about the method. They support the quality and benefits of simulation.
In this same study, researchers created an environment in which participants with autism interacting with a virtual partner. They were given the option of dialogue on the screen and initiate, maintain and conclude a pleasant conversation on a variety of topics. The findings are presented in Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking March 2011 edition.
